Roofing manufacturers today face a tougher environment than ever: harsher weather patterns, tighter regulations, and customers who expect both durability and design flexibility. TAMKO Building Products has remained competitive by evolving alongside those demands rather than merely reacting to them. More than a manufacturer of shingles, TAMKO Building Products has built its reputation on understanding the people who use its products, including the contractors who install them, the homeowners who rely on them, and the distributors who make them available. At every step, the company focuses on making life easier for its customers, ensuring its innovations address real-world needs. Chris Freeborg, Vice President and Chief Marketing, Communications, and Product Development Officer, describes the company’s philosophy: “Our focus is simple, if we can make our customers, contractors, and homeowners better, then at the end of the day, providing value for them ends up providing value for us on the back end. The more customer-centric we can be, the better.” This mindset guides every decision at TAMKO, from research and development to training programs, and defines the company’s approach to the roofing industry. TAMKO serves a wide range of customers, but contractors remain at the core of its business. These professionals span the re-roof and remodel market as well as new construction representing the day-to-day reality of the roofing industry. Homeowners, while one step removed, are equally critical to TAMKO’s thinking because the end-user experience drives repeat business, referrals, and brand trust. The company also works closely with distributors, both large and small, who provide the channels through which TAMKO® products reach customers nationwide. Together, these three groups form the ecosystem in which TAMKO operates, ensuring every innovation and service improves value across the board.
A family with roots in the concrete-cutting industry dating back to the early 1950s built one of the largest concrete-cutting businesses of its time. Drawing on the foundation laid by his father, Bruce Penhall established Connor Concrete Cutting & Coring, named after his son Connor. Following the loss of Connor in a freeway accident at a job site, Penhall and his wife, Laurie, built it with a strong emphasis on safety. Today, Connor’s name remains on every truck as a daily reminder of that mission. Before field operations, the company approaches every job with careful planning and job-site assessment. It provides concrete scanning, coring, wall sawing, deep asphalt cutting, and removal services for public works, residential, commercial, and private projects. “Safety is the most important thing for us, and it comes down to having good employees and the right equipment to do the job correctly,” says Penhall, vice president and general manager. “We can’t do it without our employees.” Connor Concrete Cutting & Coring typically comes in early on projects, working with general contractors, subcontractors, and public works teams to prepare concrete structures before other trades begin work. With most of its work union-based, the company operates in large-scale environments where timing, coordination, and job-site safety are critical to keeping projects moving. At the center of this execution are experienced union crews whose field expertise drives every stage of the work. In the early stages, an estimator from Connor Concrete Cutting & Coring visits each job site to assess conditions and determine where cuts, cores, and access openings are needed based on project requirements. While customers generally know what they need, the company helps determine how the work is carried out in the field.
Construction projects require constant coordination across architects, engineers, contractors, inspectors, and regulatory agencies. As projects become more complex, maintaining alignment across those moving parts becomes more challenging, allowing small issues to grow into larger setbacks. Dave Itwaru and Richard Persaud built Nova Holdings NYC around a different model: combining direct owner representation with active oversight and close involvement throughout a project's life. This structure keeps owners connected to decision-making and focused on resolving issues early rather than responding after delays emerge. “Our clients have direct access to us from day one through project completion. That visibility allows us to stay ahead of issues instead of waiting for problems to surface,” says Itwaru, CEO and co-founder. Nova’s work spans commercial, medical, retail, and luxury residential projects across New York, Florida, New Jersey, Texas, and North Carolina, each with different operational demands. Medical facilities require precise coordination around compliance requirements and critical systems. Retail projects depend heavily on speed and maintaining consistency across multiple locations, while luxury residential work places equal importance on communication and protecting a client’s vision. Across every project type, the company maintains the same level of proactive oversight and owner involvement. That approach is tested constantly within New York’s regulatory environment. Agencies such as the DOB, DOH, and FDNY each operate under separate approval processes, while compliance requirements, such as ADA standards, must also be addressed. To stay ahead of potential objections and delays, Nova’s in-house team reviews architectural and engineering drawings before submission. It conducts pre-inspection walkthroughs designed to identify issues before they lead to corrective work, permitting setbacks, or project interruptions.
