SEPTEMBER 2025CONSTRUCTIONBUSINESSREVIEW.COM 19TRANSFORMING CONCRETE POURING WITH INNOVATIVE FORMWORK SOLUTIONSContractors have to introduce multiple pumps to increase the speed of concrete pumping. Constantly feeding these pumps with concrete requires synchronizing the arrival of the trucks to avoid any delays. At the same time, they need to ensure that the trucks are not kept waiting for too long. Keeping the drum spinning for about an hour is acceptable, but any longer than that can affect the characteristics of the concrete. The slip-form method is also being adopted for projects that involve continuous concrete pouring. In this method, the formwork moves vertically without interruptions while pouring the concrete. Once the concrete is poured and the reinforcing bars are installed, the formwork is moved up, allowing faster completion of projects.Managing vibrations to remove air pockets presents a significant challenge in constructing thin concrete walls, as it is hard to get in the walls with internal vibrators. External vibrators are needed for this, and the concrete slump has to be very self-compacting. The form should not be overloaded in this process since the pressure becomes difficult to control. How is Doka USA providing innovative solutions to address these challenges? At Doka USA, we strive to provide comprehensive solutions for every project by supplying formwork systems tailored to specific requirements, like slip form, jump form, or bridge formwork. When providing our formwork solutions, we take into account factors like concrete type, project location, and temperature conditions. We collaborate with steel fabricators to produce formwork components that are not readily available in our yard. Additionally, our partnerships with external vibrator companies help us meet the appropriate requirements for each project. Can you walk us through some of the projects that you have recently worked on?We have played a significant role in numerous impactful projects across the U.S. We are actively involved in the prestigious Barack Obama Presidential Center project in Chicago and the Hudson Yards development project, which is one of the largest constructions accomplished in recent years. We also work on high-rise building projects, where we supply quality formwork across cities like New York, Chicago, and Seattle. Doka USA has also been part of civil projects like the C51 Reservoir construction, where we provided innovative formwork solutions and services. It is the first and only gravity roller compacted concrete dam in Florida. During the construction, upstream formwork was cycled in each placement section, and the dam was broken into 1300 linear feet sections for a total of five placements. How do you envision the future of concrete pumping in the construction industry?Precast concrete has been gaining popularity in the industry in recent years. It is more productive and faster and leads to shorter construction cycles. It also offers cost advantages compared to cast-in-place concrete. This shift toward precast construction presents numerous advantages in applications like low-rise buildings. By staying abreast of technological advancements, applying strategic management of resources, and embracing emerging trends, the construction industry can optimize concrete pumping processes to improve efficiency and deliver exceptional structures.
