Building Success Through Collaborative Execution

Jeremy M. Clayton, Director of Project Management, Ruppert Landscape
Tweet

Jeremy M. Clayton, MBA, is the Director of Project Management at Ruppert Landscape. There, he leads efforts to strengthen processes, train new talent, and ensure projects are delivered with precision. He focuses on building capable teams and raising the bar for execution across the board.

Through this article, Clayton highlights the power of collaborative project management, disciplined execution, and hands-on leadership to drive better outcomes at scale.

A Journey Built on Perseverance and Practical Experience

My professional journey began with my father’s construction company, where I learned the value of hard work and perseverance. Starting my own company after college taught me to balance operational tasks with financial and business responsibilities. Managing operations for various companies further honed my skills, but it was my MBA that provided the theoretical foundation for effective project management.

The most pivotal experience was realizing that successful project management is a collaborative effort. Involving operations and general contractors in decision-making processes allowed me to manage multiple projects efficiently and achieve higher levels of success.

Executing with Precision Through Robust Management Processes

Balancing strategic oversight with day-to-day execution hinges on a robust management process. This includes meticulous pre-planning, managing project schedules, producing accurate two-week lookaheads, and maintaining consistent daily coordination with operations.

Collaborative project management that involves all parties, including clients, helps us better understand their needs. Leaders should actively engage with the work, roll up their sleeves, and get involved to drive success

Strong communication with general contractors is essential to uphold quality standards while meeting deadlines. By focusing on these principles, we ensure that every project is executed smoothly and efficiently.

Overcoming the Scale and Complexity of Large Projects

One of the most significant challenges is managing the scale of large projects. Initially, it can be overwhelming, but breaking the project into manageable parts and ensuring each task is completed is crucial.

Every project has a list of deliverables, and by focusing on finishing each task—especially the last 5%—we can differentiate between success and failure. This approach has helped us overcome the challenges associated with large-scale projects.

Improving Project Outcomes Through Team Integration

We have focused on integrating project managers and field managers, emphasizing the cyclical nature of work. Both parties play a crucial role in the success of each job. Utilizing tools like schedules, two-week lookaheads, daily reports, meeting minutes, RFIs, and punchlists ensures that each person fulfills their role in the cycle.

This integration has significantly improved project outcomes and efficiency.

Leading with Technology, Emotional Intelligence, and Engagement

Embracing new technologies, including AI, is essential for staying competitive. However, communication and emotional intelligence will be the key differentiators.

Collaborative project management that involves all parties, including clients, helps us better understand their needs. Leaders should actively engage with the work, roll their sleeves, and get involved to drive success.

The Five Pillars That Shape My Leadership

1. Empowerment and Trust

Empowering team members by trusting them with responsibilities and decision-making fosters a sense of ownership and accountability. This leads to higher motivation and better performance.

2. Continuous Learning

Encouraging continuous learning and professional development ensures that the team stays updated with the latest industry trends and technologies, fostering innovation and growth.

3. Adaptability

Being adaptable and open to change is crucial in the dynamic construction and landscaping sectors. Leaders should be flexible and ready to pivot strategies as needed to meet evolving challenges and opportunities.

4. Sustainability

Prioritizing sustainable practices not only benefits the environment but also enhances the company’s reputation and long-term viability. Leaders should advocate for eco-friendly solutions and sustainable project designs.

5. Mentorship

Providing mentorship and guidance to team members helps in nurturing future leaders. Sharing knowledge and experience can significantly impact their professional growth and the overall success of the organization.
