Kalin Associates: Bridging Design and Construction through Clear, Sustainable Specifications

Kalin Associates

Bridging Design and Construction through Clear, Sustainable Specifications

A design vision is what architects and designers begin with, shaping spaces that inspire, function, and endure. Yet between concept and completion, that vision often collides with unavoidable demands: engineers adjusting systems, contractors chasing budgets, and schedules tightening by the week. In this vulnerable space, where design intent risks being diluted, Kalin Associates steps in to safeguard it. Founded in 1984, the firm has carved a niche as one of the industry’s few independent specification consultants. Its twelve-member team manages a database of more than 700 continuously updated specification sections, drawing from decades of experience across 6,000 projects. CEO Mark Kalin and President Jay Ford have built a practice grounded in clarity, sustainability, and close collaboration with architects, engineers, and owners. “Specs need to be clear, concise, and complete,” says CEO Kalin. “They’re what keep design intent intact and costs under control.” This philosophy drives the firm’s role as an extension of the design team, translating drawings into enforceable specifications that contractors can confidently price and build from. The process begins early, at the schematic design stage, when decisions about scope and materials carry the most weight. Ford, known for championing rigorous scope reviews, ensures each project starts with a comprehensive checklist that surfaces critical questions before design advances. By design development, Kalin Associates delivers a complete project manual, coordinating input from as many as 20 consultants into a single cohesive document. Specifications are structured to include multiple manufacturers, providing owners with cost flexibility without compromising quality. A defining strength of the firm is its leadership in sustainable design. Since 2002, Kalin Associates has written specifications for hundreds of LEED-certified projects, ensuring that sustainability goals enhance rather than compromise the architect’s vision. It is equally fluent in sustainable design standards such as Living Building Challenge, Estidama, and Passive House. At the same time, its proprietary database incorporates research on green materials and performance metrics, giving designers confidence that their choices will withstand scrutiny in the field. In one project, a client shifted mid-design to pursue LEED certification, an abrupt change Kalin’s team absorbed without derailing either the design intent or the construction schedule.

Fiberglass Structural Systems Fabrication Company of the Year 2025

AIMS Composites

The End of Vendor Juggling for Smarter Fiberglass Systems

Kinton Lawler, CEO

Fiberglass structural systems are known for their durability, corrosion resistance, electrically non-conductivity, low thermal conductivity and design flexibility—qualities that make them a strong fit for tough industrial environments. But for many clients, the real issue isn’t the material—it’s the process. Too often, they’re left juggling multiple vendors like engineering from one firm, drafting from another, fabrication elsewhere, and installation on their own. That fragmentation leads to delays, and solutions that don’t quite fit. That is where AIMS Composites steps in. A world leader in engineered fiberglass structural systems, its turnkey model brings everything under one roof. From the first sketch to final installation, it handles custom design, structural engineering, (including PE-stamped stress analysis), detailed drafting, fabrication, logistics, field support, and on-site installation. Clients work with a single team from start to finish, streamlining the process and eliminating the handoffs that typically slow projects down. But what truly sets AIMS Composites apart isn’t just how they deliver—it’s what they deliver. Instead of forcing generic, off-the-shelf products into place, the company starts with understanding the client’s distinct challenges and makes purpose-built systems from the ground up. Every solution is tailored to fit the exact application to ensure performance, efficiency and Return on Investment. “As an ISO 9001:2015 company, we are driven by a commitment to doing things right the first time—prioritizing precision, safety and customer satisfaction throughout every phase of a project. We don’t just build fiberglass systems—we build trust,” says Kinton Lawler, CEO. That trust extends to how the company operates day to day. AIMS stays flexible and open to change, continuously refining its technology and processes to improve performance. The team is quick to adapt when a project demands it, adjusting internally rather than relying on outside fixes. While the company does source select materials externally, the strong in-house inventory and self-sufficient model helps to keep schedules on track and projects moving without delay. Adaptable Systems for Demanding Environments AIMS offers a broad range of specialized products for both onshore and offshore applications. One of the flagship products is an electrically non-conductive fencing. Unlike competitor offerings, this product is a true security fence. It is easy to install and highly customizable to meet the needs of individual applications, with no single fixed design. This fencing solution is particularly suited for the onshore industry. Made from fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), the security fencing can be used as a direct replacement for traditional metal fencing, offering significant advantages in environments where corrosion and electrical conductivity are major concerns. The FRP fencing is fire retardant, non-corrosive, non-conductive, radar-invisible and serves as both a visibility barrier and a security measure..

The Contractor Consultants

The New Blueprint for Construction Hiring

Matthew DiBara, CEO

The Contractor Consultants came to life with a clear purpose: to deliver a hiring solution that understands the pace, precision, and complexity of today’s construction industry. Traditional staffing firms have long missed the mark—delivering mismatched candidates, sluggish communication, and delays that drive up costs and risks. For projects where every hour counts, this approach is no longer acceptable. Born from the vision of a fourth-generation contractor, The Contractor Consultants was built to break this cycle with a solution rooted in operational knowledge rather than recruitment theory. It applies a builder’s mindset to hiring by remaining strategic, hands-on, and closely aligned with construction teams’ operations. “We are not a recruiting company trying to understand construction; we are construction professionals who built a recruiting solution from the ground up,” says Matthew DiBara, CEO. The firm brings structure, responsiveness, and quality control to workforce hiring by aligning its process with how construction teams work. Every step, from sourcing and screening to final placement, is managed with the same accountability expected on a jobsite. The outcome is an all-around staffing solution built not around volume, but around reliability and results. In 2024, TCC conducted over 29,000 interviews, scanned more than 6,000 candidate submissions, and successfully filled 653 positions. In just the first half of 2025, placements have already reached 1,099, with 12,082 interviews conducted—a pace that continues to accelerate as demand surges across the U.S. and Canada. Purpose-Driven Hiring, Built for Results At TCC, every hiring engagement begins with a strategic foundation—one that’s customized, data-informed, and designed to produce results at scale. The Client Success Team leads the first phase, working closely with each company to understand exactly where they are now—and where they want to be by year’s end. Together, they identify the A-players already on the team, highlight current gaps, and complete a full labor market analysis to benchmark talent availability and competitiveness in each market.

Top Commercial Roofing Services in Indiana 2025

Southwest Commercial Roofing

Roofing Expertise Anchored in Trust and Partnership

Darin Hochstetler, General Manager

When roofing partners go the extra mile, they create more than just roofs. Clients are left with a memorable experience that fosters trust and lasting relationships. Southwest Commercial Roofing lives by this principle, proving that when integrity and craftsmanship go hand in hand, the result is enduring success. Southwest specializes in durable commercial roofing solutions, offering expert services in metal, flat and low-slope roof installations, repairs and replacements. From initial inspections to project completion, the priority is customer service. It goes above and beyond to add value to its customers and deliver roofs that stand the test of time. “Our intention is not to satisfy or please our customers,” says Darin Hochstetler, General Manager. “Our intention is to amaze them.” Beyond craftsmanship, Southwest prioritizes open communication and ethical decision-making, even when it means recommending a better, sometimes more expensive solution. This approach reflects its focus on long-term quality over quick fixes. Its deep-rooted commitment to do what’s in the customer’s best interests fosters a level of confidence that extends far beyond the terms of a contract, transforming each project into a true partnership. Southwest’s operations are powered by detailed scheduling and a hands-on approach to project management. It harnesses technologies like drones and thermal imaging to spot hidden roofing issues early, allowing for precise solutions. A blend of technology and attentive management streamlines the process and keeps clients informed. Southwest stands out by offering 25-30 year warranties, outdoing the industry standard. This is paired with a no dollar limit on coverage, ensuring clients receive superior protection and peace of mind. It consistently adds value by partnering with third-party public adjusters who independently represent clients during insurance claims. In one instance, the Southwest team took on a complex project for Triangle Rubber, where storm damage required extensive restoration. Its third-party public adjuster navigated a lengthy insurance negotiation to secure a fair settlement for the client. Using drone surveys and thermal imaging, hidden issues were identified and documented, ensuring the client received a complete restoration that honored both the insurance policy and Southwest’s guarantee to do what is right.

EDITORIAL

The Convergence of Data and Design in Construction’s New Era

The construction sector is undergoing a subtle but decisive shift as digital and physical innovations converge on the jobsite. Technologies once viewed as experimental—digital twins, generative design and AI-driven scheduling—are moving into mainstream adoption. By linking design models to real-time data from sensors and project management platforms, firms are now able to anticipate conflicts, optimize resource allocation and make decisions with a level of foresight that was not possible a decade ago. On the ground, automation and robotics are equally reshaping construction practice. Exoskeletons and wearable technologies are improving worker safety and productivity, drones are expanding their role in surveying and compliance monitoring and robotic systems are taking on repetitive or high-risk tasks such as bricklaying or welding. Additive manufacturing, particularly 3D-printed structural components, is advancing from trial projects into scalable applications, offering speed and material efficiency at a time when sustainability pressures are mounting. Taken together, these trends point to an industry that is not only modernizing its toolset but also redefining its approach to risk, safety, and resilience in the built environment. Driven by these trends, the sector is projected to expand at a CAGR of 5.5 percent through 2033, with segments such as fiberglass fabrication and construction hiring climbing as high as 6.4 to 8.8 percent. The magazine features a thought leadership piece by Desmond Shotwell, National Director of Renovations at AMLI Residential, highlighting planning, collaboration and technology as keys to successful renovation projects. It also includes insights from Zachary Davis, Senior Director, National Strategy & Business Development, U.S. Project & Construction Management, at Avison Young on how client focus, integration and technology are reshaping construction and real estate growth. We hope this edition helps build environment professionals harness sustainability, precision engineering, and digital workflows to drive smarter, faster outcomes across every design and construction phase.
