Trend 1: Outdoor space is now year-round space
The biggest shift isn't technical; it's expectations. Restaurant and hotel operators learned during the pandemic that covered, climate-managed outdoor space is revenue space, and they never went back. Homeowners followed. Today the question we hear isn't ‘Can we cover the patio?’ but ‘Can we use it in January?’
That demand pushes manufacturers toward fully engineered enclosures: snow-load-rated frames, integrated sidewalls and roofs that open completely when weather cooperates. A fabric awning can't do that job. A true retractable roof system can.
Trend 2: Polycarbonate glazing is maturing and showing its age
Multiwall polycarbonate transformed this industry by delivering light transmission at a fraction of glass's weight and cost. But the first generation of panels installed 10–15 years ago is now yellowing, hazing and losing UV protection. Replacement and retrofit work is becoming a major service category—one we've built a dedicated program around at Cabrio.
For buyers, the lesson is to ask any manufacturer three questions upfront: What are the alternatives to polycarbonate, what's the panel warranty and what does panel replacement actually cost down the road?
Trend 3: Motorization and smart controls are table stakes
Manual crank and hook/pull systems still have their place, but commercial operators increasingly expect push-button or app-controlled operation, wind and rain sensors and integration with building management systems. The engineering challenge is delivering that reliably outdoors—in freeze-thaw climates—for a decade or more. This is where manufacturing discipline matters more than a feature list on a spec sheet.
The challenges nobody puts in the brochure
Honesty about the hard parts is part of expertise. Three challenges define this industry right now:
Structural engineering across jurisdictions. Every municipality treats a retractable enclosure differently and permitting can stall projects longer than fabrication does.
Supply chain volatility. Aluminum extrusion and polycarbonate pricing have made cost certainty genuinely difficult to promise.
The installation gap. A well-manufactured system that's poorly installed fails early. That's why we keep design, fabrication and installation coordination under one roof, rather than shipping kits and wishing customers luck.
