Primary building components are modeled in the design phase, with no secondary members or detailed connections. BIM delivery programs require precision modeling for advanced model-based deliverables from structural engineering firms.

Fremont, CA: The World Economic Forum reports that the U.S.'s largest construction industry has not significantly changed in the past 50 years despite being the largest. To address this, many firms are experimenting with innovative structural engineering methods. Here are seven ways structural engineering is evolving thanks to innovation.

1. Integrated Digital Platform

The AEC industry uses technology for structural analysis, geometry modeling, and schedule planning but is disconnected across firms and platforms. Specialized firms are creating Integrated Digital Platforms to facilitate data flow across delivery systems, using tools like Rhino and Grasshopper for building information modeling. Walter P Moore is developing programs to transfer data from analysis programs to a central database for fabrication-ready information.

2. Visual Programming and Parametric Modeling

Engineers often use design programs for building elements but lack connectivity to other design processes. Savvy engineering firms have in-house programming capabilities, allowing them to customize or create their programs. Visual programming simplifies programming logic, improving speed and efficiency. This process benefits staff and clients, expands parametric modeling capabilities, and allows real-time analysis and iteration of options.
