Overview about the bridge which was constructed to connect the former British colony of Hong Kong with Macau and the Chinese city of Zhuhai.
FREMONT, CA: After a lengthy delay, a new bridge connecting the former British colony of Hong Kong with Macau and the Chinese city of Zhuhai was constructed. The 55-kilometer-long bridge spans the Pearl River's mouth, momentarily submerging in a tunnel in the centre to facilitate the passage of the world's largest ships. The Y-shaped bridge is divided into Macanese and Chinese sections by a large junction just outside of Macau.
The opening ceremony, which will be held in Zhuhai to avoid any potential protests, will undoubtedly highlight the bridge's incredible engineering achievements as well as its enormous potential. As it is located where one of Asia's major rivers meets the South China Sea – and is frequently struck by violent typhoons – the construction's technical execution was obviously difficult. The creation of the numerous artificial islands used for border control and bridge maintenance was also controversial.
