New technologies and globalisation are making trade finance more accessible and inclusive, promoting efficiency, transparency, and innovation, and potentially reducing poverty in developing countries.

FREMONT, CA: Construction and demolition (C&D)  waste is produced when buildings, roads, and bridges are constructed, renovated, or demolished. The environmental protection agency (EPA) advocated for a sustainable materials management (SMM) strategy, which recognises specific C&D materials as resources that can be reused in new building projects, thereby reducing the necessity to extract and manufacture new materials.

C&D materials are produced during the construction of new buildings and civil-engineering structures, as well as during the renovation or demolition of existing buildings and structures, including activities related to deconstruction. Civil-engineering structures refer to public works projects such as dams, bridges, piers, utility plants, streets, and highways.

Benefits of Reducing the Disposal of C&D Materials

When deconstruction and selective demolition techniques are used, there is an opportunity to create jobs and economic activity in recycling industries, as well as increase business opportunities within the local community.

The reuse of materials can help to decrease the expenses of building projects by avoiding the costs of purchasing and disposing of materials. Using C&D materials in new building projects can lead to a decrease in the need for disposal facilities, reducing associated environmental issues. It can also help offset the environmental impact of extracting and consuming virgin resources, as well as the production of new materials. Furthermore, it can conserve landfill space.

Source Reduction/Reducing Materials Use

The highest priority in addressing solid waste issues is given to source reduction by the EPA as it reduces life-cycle material use, waste generation, and energy use. It is a vital method to sustainably manage waste as it prevents waste from being generated in the first place. Although recycling and reuse are required methods, they are used after the waste has already been generated.

For instance, C&D source reduction measures include preserving existing buildings rather than constructing new ones, optimising the size of new buildings, designing new buildings for adaptability to prolong their useful lives, using construction methods that allow disassembly and facilitating reuse of materials, empowering alternative farming techniques, reducing interior finishes, and more.

In addition to changing the design of buildings, building systems and materials, C&D source reduction efforts incorporate purchasing agreements that prevent excess materials and packaging from arriving at the construction site.
