Age is just a number, if you have passion for your work. “Passion drives progress and then leads to success.” The story of Bill Harrington, a passionate machinist is the epitome of the above adage. Eight years after building a unique boring machine, Harrington decided to start his own drilling company at the age of 60. He founded the West Texas Boring company in 1975 while working as a pipe inspector and welder for El Paso Natural Gas. The company initially had a single boring machine and a few employees. However, Harrington worked tirelessly for 22 years to improve the machinery and procedures that helped the company grow and expand its services.

We offer installation of gas, oil, water, sewer, telecommunications, and all other underground infrastructure for major pipeline contractors, construction companies, municipalities, and exploration & production companies

In 1997, Mark Jones took over the company from his grandfather, and he continued to introduce new technologies and utilize the latest equipment available. Today, West Texas Boring is the premier horizontal directional drilling company for the Permian Basin and all of the Southwest, with over 60 employees and as many as 20 crews working onsite at a time. “We offer installation of gas, oil, water, sewer, telcommunications, and all other underground infrastructure for major pipeline contractors, construction companies, municipalities, and exploration & production companies,” Mark Jones, COO, West Texas Boring.
Derrick Pursley, General Manager

Along with leveraging the latest technologies, West Texas Boring’s longstanding success stems from its team of experienced employees who are subject matter experts in their respective fields and prioritize professionalism and integrity above all else. The combined experience of the team exceeds 500 years, which sets the company apart from competitors. West Texas Boring offers a comprehensive range of services, which include horizontal boring, dry (Auger) boring, furnish and wield casing, excavation, pipe ramming, and hydrovac evacuation. The scope of the company’s bore machining capabilities ranges from two to 48 inches in diameter and up to 3,000 feet in length. West Texas Boring also has a fleet of 20 drilling rigs that can handle loads from 30,000 pounds to 250,000 pounds. The diverse fleet includes American Augers, Vermeer, and Ditch Witch drilling machines.

With the decline in demand for oil and gas largely due to the pandemic in the last 12 months, West Texas Boring has transitioned into infrastructure, water, sewer, wind and solar, and fiber telecommunications projects. The company is diversifying its service portfolio in areas other than oil and gas to become a premier full-service drilling and underground infrastructure company.

West Texas Boring is focused on providing competitive pricing to customers and also ensuring the well-being of its employees.

“For decades, West Texas Boring has a reputation of providing exceptional services in the face of substantial challenges, and we intend to continue the company’s legacy,” Derrick Pursley, General Manager, West Texas Boring. “We pride ourselves on maintaining long-term relationships with its customers and developing them through constant communication,” adds Pursley.

Further illustrating the company’s service capabilities, Jones mentions a project in Artesia, New Mexico, where West Texas Boring installed two 36 inch casings, 200 feet long with a separation of 36 inches. They were both completed within the client’s specifications and exceeded their expectations. The entire process only took six days which was about half the time that was allotted. Similarly, for another project, West Texas Boring completed a bore that was 50 feet underwater and 3,200 feet in length. It required a 20-inch steel pipe being drilled through multiple layers of soil, rock, and gravel in the most extreme conditions. Despite such circumstances, West Texas Boring successfully completed the project in a matter of 45 days. Safety is a top priority at West Texas Boring, the company ensures that all the workplace is accident-free and its employees are able to return home safely every day. Training programs are conducted regularly and the company leverages various safety equipment and different technologies to achieve this. “West Texas Boring gets the job done safely, efficiently, and effectively in a timely fashion,” concludes Jones.
